when Eartha Kitt made the First Lady "cry"…

"Le Booing" is available on MUBI in the USA and Canada
On January 18, 1968, Eartha Kitt was invited to the White House for the First Lady's "Women Doers Luncheon"-an event about crime prevention and juvenile delinquency. What began as an innocent brunch of chicken and seafood bisque, ended in a controversial monologue from Kitt about how the youth of America were rebelling in the streets because of their anxiety about the Vietnam War. Her "outburst" became the hot topic of the day, revealing not only the country's unease about the escalating Vietnam War, but also timeless truths about the way we respond to protest.

New fan of yours here! One of the most fascinating and entertaining parts of your work is the writing you choose to highlight and quote...my God, people could really use words so beautifully then! Incredible vocabularies, layered meanings, beautiful and clever syntax. As a lover of all those things, i am excited to dive into this channel!🎉😂❤

Thanks for the deep feeling for another person. And for getting me really interested in what Amanda Konkle has to say. Want to look up more. While Dominik seems to be just a maniac with too much power revelling in abuse. Looks like he got his pleasure out of killing, eh... filming. Not the first or last in Hollywood. As far as biographies go, nobody is entitled to claim that they got inside another person and understand their driving forces. Even autobiographies are just a self-perception at a particular point in time.

a great pairing with this analysis would be Les Amants/The Lovers that became important in US legal history with its definition of pornography (ie, "i know it when i see it") and also because jeanne moreau's film career deserves more recognition & analysis...

Im a genX’er, and I grew up watching Judy Garlands movies on tv as a child. When I was 6 I would sing somewhere over the rainbow, and the trolley song to family at family gatherings. As I watched you video essay, I found myself singing along to some of my favorite classic songs played on the concert album. I will be looking for it to download. I just love Judy Garland, even though her performance in blackface is very disappointing. I suppose she didn’t have control over that, but it’s still disappointing all the same. I was waiting for someone to talk about it, because the footage of her singing in blackface became viral a few years ago, and there were no UA-camrs talking about it.

I was always under the impression that Garbo was a kind of 'thinking man's beauty' and well read, artistic etc. I just read that while waiting around on the set all she read was Movie magazines and gossip sheets.

New to the 30's culture? Well you will be locked in after watching this video, and afterward this- *Harry Warren: America's Foremost Composer (1933)* , who wrote so many hits that were in the great early 30's pre-code Busby Berkeley choreographed films. Must sees. Clara Bow was great in Wings (1927) of course. A great one to see at a theatre with the Wurlitzer theater pipe organ!

I remember seeing the commercials for Part III so many decades ago and what I noticed was quite a bit of content that was edited OUT of the film. Basically, it was a modern-day re-shoot nightmare and Coppola needed to go different directions on the fly when he saw things were working even worse than what was going to be the final product. The death knell of this movie was when Robert Duval didn't want to be a part of it. That was a HUGE blow that Coppola made even worse by casting his talentless offspring.

My favorite actress. If the scandals had not happened and if the studio had given her better material, she could have easily transitioned from the 'flapper' films into Screwball Comedies that were just about to emerge when she retired. I think she would have been right there with Carole Lombard and Claudette Colbert. Then if she makes it into the 40's, with her tragic background, the emotions she could have drawn on for Film Noir roles. Just imagine.

i always felt sofia was fine for the role & the real issue is simply that during her death scene she is badly underacting and then immediately al pacino is overacting just as badly, and the stark contrast just destroys the audience suspension of disbelief. for most of the movie i actually think she conveys well the passiveness & uncertainty of a young woman who is unsure about her place in life, love, family, and catholicism.

I think Blonde is a masterpiece. Sensitive and beautiful like Marilyn Monroe. I suggest she would have approved. The outrage surrounding the film is unsurprising considering Americans, in particular, have always been notoriously squeamish regarding nudity. I feel the film is sympathetic not exploitative. I suppose it is shocking to many shallow filmgoers to be presented with the nuts and bolts of life lived in an attractive female body.

  • @DigitalLazarus

Not that my opinion matters but, as a life-long fan of MM, I read Joyce Carol Oats's BLONDE when it was published and absolutely loved it -- understanding fully that Oat's novel was totally fiction. And with regards to this movie? I thought it was absolutely outstanding, and was totally emotionally involved and riveted from open to close, even though knowing the end, I was devastated nonetheless. I may be in the minority but I loved this film.

I can't compliment enough how well researched this documentary is! and can I just say, the women of the silent era were one of a kind stars. I've watched colleen moore and have been captivated by her since, probably because all the resources they had back then was themselves, so every silent film is a spectacle not enough people dive into. I think I'm gonna go on a clara bow film binge right now 😅
